Description |
The invasion of Sicily was the first major operation in the Mediterranean
following the surrender of Axis forces in North Africa. It was given the
name 'Operation Husky' and was the first amphibious assault against German
and Italian forces. A total of 115,000 British and Commonwealth and 66,000 US forces were landed together with supporting vehicles and supplies. The naval forces comprised 279 warships, 2074 landing and coastal craft and 237 merchant and troop ships. During the campaign 13 ships were sunk by air attack, and many damaged, 2 LST's and 2 merchant ships torpedoed and sunk by U-boats.
