HMS Quilliam (1942) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Quilliam was the Q Class, destroyer leader. As destroyer leader she had slightly reduced armament to allow the increased complement and working space needed to control a flotilla.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 19-Aug-1940, launched 29-Nov-1941, and commissioned 22-Oct-1942.

On commissioning served in the Mediterranean. Then early 1943 to South Africa for a short time.

Back to the Mediterranean for the Sicily and Salerno landings.

Mar-1944 as part of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla went to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and took part in carrier raids against Japanese held territory. At the end of 1944 went to Australia as part of the British Pacific Fleet, then from early 1945 served with US Task Force 57 until the end of the war.

Was badly damaged May-1945 in collision with HMS Indomitable.

21-Nov-1945 transferred permanently to the Dutch Navy.

Won the Battle Honours: Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Mediterranean 1943, Sabang 1944, East Indies 1944 and Okinawa 1945.
