HMS Whimbrel (1943) SL  (1st)

    
This the first ship to carry the name HMS Whimbrel was a Modified Black Swan (1942), escort vessel (sloop).

Built by Yarrow, laid down 31-Oct-1941, launched 25-Aug-1942 and completed 12-Jan-1943.

On completion began support group work in the Atlantic until Jun-1943, when she started convoy escort work on the Gibraltar route. This lasted until Oct-1943

Then it was back escort work in the Atlantic until Nov-1943. Refitted at Hartlepool Nov-1943 to Jan-1944. After this it was support group work until Jun-1944 when she took part in the Normandy landings work until Aug-1944. Refitted at Sheerness Sep-1944.

Then it was back to the Atlantic before she refitted at Newport to prepare her for transfer to the Pacific Fleet. The refit completed Dec-1944 and she joined the Pacific Fleet Mar-1945.

She remained in the Pacific until the end of 1946 when she returned to the UK to be paid off into reserve.

Remained in reserve until Nov-1949 when she was sold to Egypt and renamed ENS El Malek Farouk.

Renamed ENS Tariq in 1954, and continued in service until 2002. The last British sloop in her original form.

Won the Battle Honours: Sicily 1943, Atlantic 1943-44, English Channel 1944, Normandy 1944 and Arctic 1944 and Okinawa 1945.
