This the eighth ship to carry the name HMS Tartar was a
Tribal Class, destroyer. Built by Swan Hunter, laid down 26-Aug-1936, launched 21-Oct-1937, and commissioned 10-Mar-1939. Took part in the Norwegian campaign, then North Sea operations conducting strikes against German convoys off the Norwegian coast. As part of the 6th Flotilla took part in the hunt for the Bismarck. Then 1941-42 was spent mainly on Arctic and Russian convoy duty, with the occasional deployment to the Mediterranean for important Malta convoys Sep-1943 covered the Avalanche landings at Salerno. Mid 1944 saw transfer to the Channel as part of the 10th Flotilla, and action during the Normandy landings where she was damaged in action against German destroyers. Then as operation in the European theatre wound down it was out to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean, and operations off the Burma and Malaya coasts against Japanese light forces. Sold 06-Jan-1948 and broken up by Cashmore of Newport. Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940-41, 'Bismarck' 1941, Arctic 1942, Malta Convoys 1942, North Africa 1942-43, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Mediterranean 1943, Normandy 1944, English Channel 1944, Biscay 1944, Burma 1945 and Malaya 1945.
