HMS Eclipse (1934) DD  (8th)

    
This the eighth ship to carry the name HMS Eclipse was an E Class, destroyer.

Built by Denny, laid down 22-Mar-1933, launched 12-Apr-1934, and commissioned 29-Nov-1934.

On completion formed the 5th Destroyer Flotilla with her sister ships.

Took part in the King George V Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 16-Jul-1935.

At the start of WW2 served with the Home Fleet in home waters.

Took part in the Norwegian Campaign, where she received bomb damage and was abandoned. Later towed by her sister ship HMS Escort for 5½ days and saved.

In Mar-1942 received damage from German destroyers while defending the Russian convoy PQ13.

She then spent a year of home and arctic duty.

Spring 1943 transferred to Western Approaches Command, for convoy escort work.

Later in 1943 it was to the Mediterranean to help with the Sicily and Salerno landings.

To the Aegean Sea where she struck a mine off Kalimnos 24-Oct-1943 and sank.

Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Arctic 1941-43, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Aegean 1943 and Atlantic 1943.
