HMS Formidable (1940) CV  (5th)

    
This HMS Formidable the fifth to carry the name was laid down 17-Jun-1937, launched 17-Aug-1939 and completed 24-Nov-1940.

She was one of six armoured fleet carriers of the Illustrious (1940) CV Class.

Her first deployment was to the Indian Ocean, and in February 1941 her aircraft operated against the Italians at Mogadishu and later Massawa.

Then it was to the Mediterranean to replace the damaged HMS Illustrious in the Mediterranean. While there Formidable was badly damaged during operations in the German invasion of Crete. She was repaired at Norfolk, Virginia in the USA, and rejoined the Fleet in Dec-1941 in company with HMS Illustrious which had also had battle damage repaired at Norfolk.

Then it was to the Indian Ocean from Mar to Aug-1942.  In Sep-1942 she returned to the Mediterranean as part of Force H. 

1943 saw her still in the Mediterranean supporting landings in Sicily and Italy.

May 1944 saw a change to the Home Fleet.

Then in 1945 it was out to the Pacific Fleet until the end of WW2.

Scrapped in 1953.

Won the Battle Honours: Matapan 1941, Crete 1941, Mediterranean 1941, East Indies 1941, North Africa 1942-43, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Norway 1944, Okinawa 1945 and Japan 1945.
