Honour - Crimea 1854-55 |
||||
Description |
Following the outbreak of war between Turkey and Russia, and Russian/Turkish
Fleet action off the port of Sinope in Northern Turkey, Britain and France
entered the war on the Turkish side. In Sep-1854 a joint Anglo-French-Turkish force of about 60,000 landed near Sevastopol and laid siege to it. During the bombardment, it was shown how superior an armoured steamship firing explosive shells was to a wooden ship firing solid shot. Sevastopol surrendered Sep-1855 after their fleet had been scuttled. However actions continued in the Sea of Azov until Nov-1855. The significance of the actions was that they showed the power of the prototype modern battleship. It marked the end of the era of wooden line-of-battle ships.
