Honour - BELGIAN COAST 1914-18 |
||||
Description |
For the four years of World War 1, the Belgian Coast marked the extreme left
of the battle lines which stretched from there to the Swiss frontier. Initially the port of Antwerp was of strategic importance and was reinforced by a Royal Navy Division, 2,000 marines and tens of thousands of troops. However it fell and the Navy evacuated the defenders to the UK. From then on, German forces on and near the coast were bombarded in a series of operations which lasted for 4 years and included assaults on Zeebrugge and Ostend in 1918. The bombarding ships included old battleships and 40 year old gunnery tenders.
