HMS Vanguard (1586) (1st)

This the first HMS Vanguard was a 31-gun Galleon.
Built at Woolwich, launched 1586, 108ft long, 32ft wide and of 450 tons builders measurement (bm). She was armed with 4 x 32 pdr, 14 x 18pdr, 11 x 9pdr, and 2 x 6pdr guns. Rebuilt at Chatham 1615, with an increased tonnage of 650 tons bm, and 40 guns. Another rebuild followed in 1631 at Woolwich as 731 tons bm, and 56 guns. Sunk 12-Jul-1667 as a blockship at Rochester. Won the battle Honours: Armada 1588, Cadiz 1596, Portland 1653, Gabbard 1653, Scheveningen 1653, Lowestoft 1665, Four Days' Battle 1666 and Orfordness 1666.
