This the first ship to carry the name HMS Tartar was a fifth
rate, 32-gun ship. The name ship of a class of 3 ships. Built at Woolwich Dockyard, launched 12-Sep-1702,108ft long, 29ft 6in wide and of 420 and 7/94th tons builders measurement. Armed with 4 x demi-culverins (later 12pdrs), 22 x 6pdr and 6 x 4pdr guns. Captured the privateer La Bonne-Union 03-Aug-1704. Went to the West Indies 1705. With HMS Adventure captured the French 36-gun Les Jeux in the North Sea 07-Jun-1706. Captured the privateer L'Entreprenant 03-Nov-1708. Escorted Newfoundland convoys 1709-10. Refitted at Deptford Mar-1713 toJul-1714. Then again Sep-1790 to Jan-1721 after which she went to Virginia. Another refit took place at Deptford Nov-1728 after which she was re-rated as a 20-gun sixth rate. Went to Jamaica 1728 where she was paid off 07-Jun-1732. Returned to the UK and was broken up at Deptford May-1733 then rebuilt as a sixth rate. . Won the Battle Honour: Velez Malaga 1704.
