Honour - Sabang 1944 |
||||
Description |
The action comprised an air strike and surface bombardment, by aircraft and
surface units of the Eastern Fleet against Japanese occupied installations
an d shore batteries at Sabang on the coast of Java, Indonesia. The battleship Queen Elizabeth (8 x 15" guns) and Battlecruiser Renown (6 x 15" guns), together with the aircraft carriers Illustrious and Victorious were supported by a strong cruiser and destroyer force. The fact that the Royal Navy was able to successfully engage Japanese shore installations showed how much the tide of war had turned, and how Japanese shore based aircraft had weakened since the loss of Prince of Wales and Repulse in 1941.north-east of Singapore.
