This the eighth ship to carry the name HMS Jackal was a J
Class, destroyer. Built by John Brown on the Clyde, laid down, 24-Sep-1937, launched 25-Oct-1938, and commissioned 13-Apr-1939. On commissioning formed the 7th Destroyer Flotilla based on the Humber. At the start of WW2 was renumbered the 5th Flotilla. Took part in the Norwegian campaign, then moved to Plymouth for Channel patrols. Then to the Mediterranean, where she was torpedoed by aircraft Dec-1941 and damaged. While in action against Axis convoy routes on the North African coast, was bombed and sunk 11-May-1942. Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939-41, Norway 1940, English Channel 1940, Crete 1941, Mediterranean 1941 and Libya 1941-42.
