HMS Encounter (1934) DD  (6th)

    
This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Encounter was an E Class, destroyer.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 15-Mar-1933, launched 29-Mar-1934, and commissioned 02-Nov-1934.

On completion formed the 5th Destroyer Flotilla with her sister ships.

Took part in the King George V Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 16-Jul-1935.

Began WW2 in home waters with the Home Fleet. Then to the Mediterranean in 1940. From there, with Electra, escorted Repulse to Colombo at the end of 1941 and joined the Eastern Fleet.

Took part in the Battle of the Java Sea Feb-1942.

Then on 01-Mar-1942, with HMS Exeter and the USS Pope, met a strong Japanese squadron in Java Sea where all three were sunk.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939, Norway 1940, Spartivento 1940, Mediterranean 1941, Libya 1941, Malta Convoys 1941, Malaya 1942 and Sunda Strait 1942.
