Description The action took place in the Sunda Strait to the west of Java.

Following the defeat of ABDA (American-British-Dutch-Australian) naval forces in the Java Sea 27-Feb, surviving allied warships tried to clear the area.

The damaged heavy cruiser USS Houston and cruiser HMAS Perth sailed from Batavia via the Sunda Strait. However they encountered a Japanese heavy cruiser squadron and were both sunk.

In a similar scene the damaged cruiser HMS Exeter, and destroyers HMS Encounter and USS Pope sailed from Surabaya, were found and attacked by Japanese aircraft and all sunk.
