This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Encounter was a 2nd
Class, Protected Cruiser. Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 28-Jan-1901, launched 18-Jun-1902, and completed 21-Nov-1905 On completion went to the Australia Station 1905-14, and control transferred to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) 1912. To the Pacific Station 1914-15, China Station 1915-16, back to the Pacific Station 1916-18. Permanently transferred to the RAN Dec-1919. Renamed HMAS Penguin May-1923 and used as a depot ship until paid off 1929. Scuttled off Sydney Heads 14-Sep-1932.
