Description |
The island of Madagascar off the East coast of Southern Africa was occupied
by Vichy French forces. it could have been vulnerable to attack by Japanese
forces from their bases at Singapore and Indonesia. If take, all routes to and from the middle east would have been threatened. The attack on 05-May took the defenders by surprise. By early on 07-May the town and its defences were captured and large numbers of prisoners captured. The attack showed the ability to transport large army forces over a large distance and put them ashore under cover of carrier borne aircraft. The pre-cursor to many amphibious assaults over the course of the war.
