This the first ship to carry the name HMS Sapphire was a
36-gun, ship. Built by Ratcliffe, launched 1651, and of 442 tons builders measurement. Run ashore 31-Mar-1671 to avoid capture by the French. Won the Battle Honours: Dover 1652, Portland 1653, Gabbard 1653, Scheveningen 1653 and Lowestoft 1665.
