HMS Hyperion (1936) DD  (2nd)

    
This the second ship to carry the name HMS Hyperion was an H Class, destroyer.

Built by Swan Hunter, laid down 26-mar-1935, launched 08-Apr-1936, and commissioned 03-Dec-1936.

On commissioning, joined the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean, and was still there when WW2 started.

Sent initially to the South Atlantic, then early 1940 to home waters for the Norwegian Campaign.

May-1940 it was back to the Mediterranean for fleet actions with Malta convoys and the evacuation of Crete.

Also saw action when the Australian Cruiser Sydney engaged the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni, when Hyperion finished off the Italian ship with torpedoes.

Torpedoed 22-Dec-1940 by the Italian submarine Serpente, and the wreck sunk later by Ilex.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939, Calabria 1940, Spada 1940, Libya 1940 and Mediterranean 1940.
