This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Dido was a 2nd Class,
Protected Cruiser. Built by London & Glasgow Co, laid down 30-Aug-1894, launched 20-Mar-1896 (but ground subsided under slipway, not floated for three days), and completed 10-May-1898. On completion went to the Mediterranean 1898-1901, (including a detachment to China 1900), then returned to the UK 1902. Served as Coast Guard Vessel at Hull 1903-94, Channel Battle Squadron 1904-07, into reserve 1907-09. Home Fleet Battle Squadron 1909-10. Refitted 1911. Then joined the 3rd Fleet 1911-12. Served as Submarine Depot ship 1912-14, then Destroyer Depot Ship 1914-19. Final service was as Depot Ship, Reserve Destroyers at Portsmouth 1919-26. Sold 16-Dec-1926.
