HMS Defence (1815)  (3rd)
3rd Rate 74-gun

    
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Defence was a third rate, 74-gun ship-of-the-line.

Built at Chatham Dockyard, launched 25-Apr-1815, 176ft long, 48ft 6in wide and of 1,754 tons builders measurement.

Originally was to be named HMS Marathon, but this was changed to Defence in 1812 during construction.

Used as a convict ship from 1849.

Burned by accident 14-Jul-1857, and wreck broken up Jan-1858.
