HMS Defence (1909) CC  (5th)

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Defence was an Armoured Cruiser.

Built at Pembroke Dock, laid down 22-Feb-1905, launched 24-Apr-1907, and completed 09-Feb-1909.

On completion joined the Home Fleet 1909-11, then went to the China Station 1912-13. To the Mediterranean as Flagship 1st Cruiser Squadron 1913-14.

Set out for the South Atlantic to reinforce Cradock's Squadron but was diverted to the Cape of Good Hope Nov-1914.

Joined the Grand Fleet Jan-1915.

Sunk at the Battle of Jutland 31-May-1916 by gunfire from the German Friedrich Der Grosse with the loss of 893 of her crew.

Won the Battle Honour: Jutland 1916.
