HMS Quiberon (1942) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Quiberon was a Q Class, destroyer.

Built by White, laid down 04-Oct-1940, launched 31-Jan-1942, and commissioned 22-Jul-1942.

On commissioning was manned by the Royal Australian Navy, but administered by the Royal navy. Went to the Mediterranean in time to take part in the Pedestal convoy to Malta.

Mar-1944 as part of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla went to the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and took part in carrier raids against Japanese held territory. At the end of 1944 went to Australia as part of the British Pacific Fleet, then from early 1945 served with US Task Force 57 until the end of the war.

After the Japanese surrender assisted with the re-occupation of Shanghai.

Transferred permanently to the Royal Australian Navy 1945.

Conversion to an anti-submarine frigate similar to a type 15 took from 15-May-1950 to 18-Dec-1957.

Paid off to reserve 26-Jun-1964.

Sold 15-Feb-1972 and broken up in Japan.

Won the Battle Honours: Mediterranean 1942, North Africa 1942-43, Atlantic 1943, East Indies 1944, Okinawa 1945 and Japan 1945.
