HMS Philomel (1891) CC  (6th)

    
This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Philomel was a 3rd Class Protected Cruiser.

Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 08-May-1889, launched 28-Aug-1890 and completed 10-Nov-1891.

On completion served on the Cape Station 1891-98. Refitted at Devonport 1898. Then it was back to the Cape Station 1892-1902 for a 2nd time, took part in operations at the Benin River 1897, returning to the UK for refit 1902. Placed on the non-effective list 1904 and laid up in the Firth of Forth Feb-1905.

Refitted 1906-08, then served in the Mediterranean 1908. Moved to the East Indies 1909-13, and transferred to the New Zealand Division 1914.

Served in the Pacific 1914, Mediterranean and Persian Gulf 1914-17.

Paid off 1917.

Used as a training hulk at Auckland from 1921, and later a base ship.

Listed for disposal 1946 and scuttled off Coromandel 1949.

Won the Battle Honours: Benin 1897 and South Africa 1899-1900.
