This the only ship to carry the name HMS Oribi was an O Class,
destroyer. Built by Fairfield, laid down 15-Jan-1940, launched 14-Jan-1941, and commissioned 05-Jul-1941. Took part in the Lofoten Raid Dec-1941. Russian convoy escort work took up 1942. Then 1943 it was to the Atlantic as part of 3rd and 5th Support groups, except for a spell in mid year when she was in the Mediterranean for taking part in the Sicily and Salerno landings. Rammed and sank U-125 May-1943. Took part in operation for the Normandy landings, then back north for Russian convoy work until the end of the war. Continued in service after the war ended. Paid off 01-Jan-1946. Transferred to Turkey 18-Jun-1946, and renamed Gayret. Broken up 1965. Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1941, Malta Convoys 1941, Arctic 1942-44, North Africa 1942, Atlantic 1942-43 and Normandy 1944.
