This the sixteenth ship to carry the name HMS Lion was a second rate, 80-gun, ship-of-the-line.

Built at Pembroke Dock, launched 29-Jul-1847, 190ft long, 57ft wide, and of 2,580 tons builders measurement (bm).

Conversion to a screw ship completed 17-May-1859, with increased tonnage of 2,611 tons bm, and displacing 3,482 tons.

Used as a training ship from 1871.

Sold 11-Jul-1905.
