This the second ship to carry the name HMS Kestrel was a Clown class, 2 gun, wooden screw gunboat.

Built by Miller of Liverpool, laid down 14-Jan-1856, launched 20-May-1856 and completed 04-May-1856.

Sunk in action Jun-1859 at Peiho river. Raised and sold 16-Mar-1866 to Glover & Co of Yokohama, resold to the Japanese Navy.

Won the Battle Honour: China 1856-60.
