HMS Gloucester (1737)  (5th)
4th Rate 50-gun

This the fifth HMS Gloucester was a fourth rate 50-gun ship.

Built at Sheerness Dockyard, 134ft long, 35ft wide, and of 714 tons builders measurement. She was launched 04-Oct-1737.

In 1740, Captain Anson led a squadron of ships on a circumnavigation of the globe.  One of the ships in the squadron being the fifth Gloucester.  

Having rounded Cape Horn and crossed the Pacific the ship was damaged in a storm near the island of Tinian off China in 1742, consequently Anson was forced to order the destruction of the ship by fire to avoid its capture by the Spanish.
