(The 5th HMS Exeter should have been a Type
82 Bristol Class Destroyer, but her construction was not completed.)
So the fifth and latest HMS Exeter was a Type 42 Destroyer, the lead ship of the second batch to be constructed. Built by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders Ltd, whose keel was laid down on 22-July 1976, launched 25-April-1978, and commissioned 19-Sept-1980. Took part in the Falklands War of 1982. During the 1st Gulf War of 1991, provided escort duties for a US Battleship and Mine Counter-measures units off the coast of Kuwait. In 1997 she began an extensive refit at Rosyth Dockyard, and rejoined the Fleet on 11-Sept-1998. The ship's motto is: Semper Fidelis - 'Always faithful'. Took part in the Trafalgar 200 Fleet Review. Paid off at Portsmouth 27-May-2009. The last warship that took part in the Falklands War to be decommissioned. Won the Battle Honours: Falkland Islands 1982 and Kuwait 1991.
