Type 82 Bristol Class (1973) DG

The Type 82 Class of guided missile armed Destroyers were intended to be a class of four to escort the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft carriers.

However when the Carriers were cancelled, only the lead ship HMS Bristol was completed and used as a testbed for new weapons systems. The other three ships were cancelled.

The weapons systems tested were, the Sea Dart Missile system, a new 4.5in gun, and the Anglo-Australian Ikara anti-submarine missile system.

Bristol saw action during the 1982 Falklands War.
