HMS Captain (1825)  (5th)
Receiving Ship

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Captain was a receiving ship.

Originally HMS Royal Sovereign, a 1st Rate 100-gun ship-of-the-line.

Construction began in January 1774 and after spending twelve and a half years on the stocks she was finally launched on 4-Sep-1786, completed and sailed 26-Aug-1790.

She was of 2,175 tons builders measurement, 184ft long and 52ft wide.

Fought at Trafalgar and spent 1806 repairing the damage received. (See: Fleets after the Battle.)

On 17-May-1825 re-named HMS Captain, and converted to a Receiving Ship at Plymouth.

Broken up at Plymouth, August 1841.
