HMS Australia (1913) BC (3rd) |
|
This the third ship to carry the name Australia was one of three
Indefatigable Class battlecruisers.
Built by John Brown Shipyard on the Clyde, laid down Jun-1910, launched 25-Oct-1911 and completed Jun-1913. After completion she served with the Royal Australian Navy. At the beginning of WW1 was involved with operations in the South Atlantic and Pacific, sinking the German merchant ship Eleonore Woermann near the Falkland Islands on 6-Jan-1915. After this she joined the Grand Fleet but missed Jutland as she was under repair following a collision with HMS New Zealand. On her return to the Fleet joined 2nd Battle Cruiser Squadron as Flagship until the end of the war. After the war she returned to the Australian Navy as Flagship but was sunk as a target, off Sydney 12-Apr-1924 as part of the force reductions resulting from the Washington Treaty of 1922.
