Astraea Class (1894) CC |
|
The
eight ships of the Astraea Class (1894) were 2nd class protected cruisers.
Enlarged versions of the Apollo Class (1892) and part of the 1889 construction programme. The low midship freeboard of previous small cruiser classes ended, as they had a full length weather deck with no separate forecastle or poop decks. Therefore they were much drier, and they also had improved seakeeping qualities. As they had similarly armed to the smaller Apollo class they were considered by some as under-gunned for their size. As a class they served extensively throughout the world. Although obsolete by 1905 they served on foreign stations for several years after this. Three served as cruisers during WW1.
