Northampton Class (1878) BB |
|
The two
ships of the Northampton Class were the last battleships to have their
guns disposed on the broadside.
They were a follow on from HMS Shannon and were not a successful design. They were to small to have proper role as Fleet battleships. Their role was seen as being to engage unarmoured cruisers, but they lacked the speed for this. They had good endurance and so were suited for use on foreign stations which involved long distance passages.
