Defence Class (1862) BB |
|
This
was the second class of ironclads to be ordered and followed the Warrior
Class.
The Admiralty were concerned about the cost of ships the size of Warrior, and so ordered the building of a slower and smaller class of ironclad, which nevertheless retained the size of gun and thickness of armour of Warrior. Unlike Warrior, this class had a ram bow, but otherwise were scaled down versions of the Warrior design. But they were unsatisfactory as their low speed made them unable to keep up with larger, faster ironclads, and also did not have the speed to catch enemy ships.
