Ant Class (1870)

| The 24
ships of the Ant Class (1870) were iron coastal gunboats. Sometimes known as
"flatirons". from their appearance, or Rendel gunboats after their designer
George Rendel. They were highly manoeuvrable and were the first Royal Navy warships designed without any rig. Their single 10in MLR gun forward was mounted on an elevating hydraulic platform which allowed it to be lowered into the hold during passage to improve seaworthiness and raised when needed for action.
