HMS Wessex (1944) DD  (2nd)

    
This the second ship to carry the name HMS Wessex was a W Class (1943), destroyer.

Built by Fairfield, laid down 20-Oct-1942, launched 02-Sep-1943, and commissioned 11-May-1944.

On commissioning formed part of the 27th Destroyer Flotilla.

To the Eastern Fleet in the Indian ocean Nov-1944, then Jan-1945 to the British Pacific Fleet, where she remained for the rest of the war.

Remained in service after the war.

Sold to the South African Navy 29-Mar-1950 and renamed Jan Van Riebeeck.

Was partially converted to a frigate 1966

Sunk as a target 25-Mar-1980 off Cape Town.

Won the Battle Honours: East Indies 1944 and Okinawa 1945.
