HMS Urania (1944) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Urania was a destroyer.

Built by Vickers Armstrong in Barrow, laid down 18-Jun-1942, launched 19-May-1943, and commissioned 18-Jan-1944.

On commissioning served in the Channel, then Jun-1944 completed operations as part of the Normandy landings.

After this it was on to the Mediterranean and duty in the Adriatic.

To the East Indies Early 1945, before moving to the British Pacific Fleet until the end of the war.

Converted to a Type 15 frigate 1953-55 with the pennant number F08.

Went into reserve 1959.

Sold 16-Dec-1970 and broken up at Faslane.

Won the Battle Honours: Normandy 1944, Okinawa 1945 and Japan 1945.
