This the first ship to carry the name HMS Tribune was a fifth rate, 42-gun, ship.

Originally French, captured 08-Jun-1796 by HMS Unicorn off Ireland and of 916 tons builders measurement. Armed with 8 x 32pdr carronades, 26 x 12pdr and 8 x 6pdr guns. 

Wrecked 16-Nov-1797 on Thrum Shoal, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
