HMS Thunderer (1877) BB  (5th)

This HMS Thunderer was the fifth to carry the name.

She was a turret ship, constructed at Pembroke Dock, laid down in Jun-1969,  launched 25-Mar-1872 and completed in May-1877.

She served in home waters 1876-78, then went on to the Mediterranean Fleet until 1881. Went into Reserve at Malta in 1881 and returned to the Fleet 1885-86.

After a spell in Reserve at home she had a major refit and modernisation, being re-armed and with new machinery.

She returned to the Mediterranean 1891-92 but constant boiler problems reduced her to Reserve or guardship at home until paid off  in 1907.

Sold 13-Sep-1909.
