HMS Somerset (1698) (1st)

This the first ship to carry the name HMS Somerset (or Somersett)
was a third rate 80-gun ship-of-the-line.
Built at Chatham Dockyard, launched 1698, 158ft long, 42ft 6in wide and of 1, 263 tons builders measurement. She served as Admiral Sir George Rooke's flagship at the battle of Vigo Bay 12-Oct-1702. Reduced to a hulk 1715 and broken up at Woolwich Aug-1740. Won the Battle Honours: Vigo 1702 and Velez Malaga 1704. |
