This the first ship to carry the name HMS Serapis was a fifth rate, 44-gun, ship.

Built by Randall of Rotherhithe, launched 04-Mar-1779, 140ft long, 38ft wide and of 886 tons builders measurement.

Captured 23-Sep-1779 by the American privateer Bon Homme Richard, off Flamborough Head.

Transferred to the French Navy.

Won the Battle Honour: Bonhomme Richard 1779.
