This the third ship to carry the name HMS Powerful was the name
ship of a class of two, 1st Class, Protected Cruisers. Built by Vickers, laid down 1894, launched 24-Jul-1895, and completed 08-Jun-1897. On completion underwent trials and alterations, 1897-98, then to the China Station 1898-1902 with a detachment to the Cape Station 1899-1901. During this detachment she landed part of a naval brigade which assisted in the relief of Ladysmith. Returned to the UK and refitted 1902-03. Then into reserve 1903-05. To the Australia Station as Flagship 1905-11. Returned to the UK and joined the 3rd Fleet 1912. Reduced to the subsidiary list 1913 and used as a training ship at Devonport. Renamed HMS Impregnable Nov-1919. Sold 1929 and broken up 31-Aug-1929. Won the Battle Honour: South Africa 1899-1900.
