HMS Penzance (1931) SL  (3rd)

    
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Penzance was a Hastings Class (1930) escort sloop.

Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 29-Jul-1929, launched 10-Apr-1930, and completed 15-Jan-1931.

On commissioning went to the Gulf until Oct-1931. Then served at the Red Sea until 29-Nov-1935 with refits at Malta May-1932 and Jun-1933.

After this moved to the Africa Station from Nov-1935 until May-1938, which included refit at Simonstown Aug-1936 to Jan-1937.

Returned to the UK May-1938 and completed refit at Chatham, then moved to the America & Wes Indies Station, arriving at Bermuda Jun-1939.

At the outbreak of WW2 was based at Trinidad on patrol work and remained there until Mar-1940 when she moved to Bermuda. Ordered to return to the UK Jul-1940, leaving Sydney CB with Convoy SC 1 on 15-Aug-1940.

Torpedoed and sunk by U-37 on 24-Aug-1940.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1940.
