HMS Mersey (1887) CC (3rd) |
|
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Mersey was the name
ship of a class of four 2nd Class Protected Cruisers. They were the first cruisers to be completed without a sailing rig, similar to the Leander Class (1885) CC, and part of the 1883 Construction Programme. They were considered to be the most successful class of cruisers constructed to date, steady gun platforms, good seaboats and drier than the Leander's due to having higher bulwarks. However the development of the quick-firing gun made them obsolescent and only Severn saw much active service as a cruiser. The others went initially into reserve, but Forth and Thames survived the 1905 mass axing to give further service as depot ships.
