HMS Lightning (1877) TB  (8th)

    
This the eighth ship to carry the name HMS Lightning was a prototype 1st Class, Torpedo Boat, also known as TB 1. Eleven further boats followed known as the Lightning Class (TB 2 to TB 12).

Built by Thornycroft of Chiswick, launched 1877, 84ft 6in long, 11ft wide and displacing 28 tons.

Trials began 22-May-1877. A bow torpedo tube fitted 1879, temporary ducted screw fitted 1881. Torpedo side dropping gear trialled 1883.

Condemned as inefficient and used for harbour service 1884.

Engine removed 1895, and hull sold 1896.
