HMS Lewes (1940) DD  (2nd)

This the second ship to carry the name HMS Lewes was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Conway DD70, built at Norfolk Naval Yard, laid down 20-Nov-1917, launched 29-Jun-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 10-Oct-1918. Later de-commissioned, then re-commissioned as USS Craven, to allow it to be transferred to, and commissioned in the Royal Navy 23-Oct-1940 and renamed HMS Lewes.

Refitted at Devonport from 17-Nov-1940 to 28-Mar-1941. But was bombed while still in the yard and so did not enter service with Rosyth Command until Feb-1942 for escort work on the East coast.

Refitted at the end of 1942 on the Humber as an Air Target ship and went to Capetown Mar-1943 in this role. Moved to the Eastern Fleet at Ceylon Aug-1943 to continue air target work as the strength of the Fleet Air Arm increased in that command.

Moved to Sydney when the British Pacific Fleet was formed still as an air target. Continued with this duty until the end of WW2.

Paid off Nov-1945 and scuttled 25-May-1946 off the Sydney coast.

Won the Battle Honour: North Sea 1942.
