HMS Illustrious (1789)  (1st)
3rd Rate 74-gun

    
The first HMS Illustrious, was a 3rd Rate,  74-gun ship of the line.

Built by Adams Shipyard of Buckler's Hard, and launched 07-Jul-1789.

She saw action against the French off Toulon in 1793 and at Genoa in 1795. 

Severely damaged in a later action she was driven ashore at Avenza by a violent storm while being towed home for repair. 

Set ablaze and abandoned 14-Mar-1795.

Won the Battle Honour: Genoa 1795.
