HMS Glasgow (1979) DG (8th) |
|
The latest ship to carry the name Glasgow is the eighth to do so.
She was laid down at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders at Wallsend on 14-April-1976. When commissioned in October 1979 she was the 6th and last batch 1 Type 42 Destroyer to join the Fleet. The ship's motto is 'Memor Es Tourum - Be mindful of your ancestors'. During the 1982 Falklands War Glasgow was the first warship to
enter the South Atlantic Exclusion Zone in May 1982. She was hit by a bomb
on the 12 May that luckily passed through the aft engine room without
exploding or causing injury. Decommissioned 01-Feb-2005. Won the Battle Honour: Falkland Islands 1982.
