This the first ship to carry the name HMS Champion was a sixth rate, 24-gun, ship.

Built by Barnard of Ipswich, launched 17-May-1779, 114ft 6in long, 32ft wide and of 519 tons builders measurement.

Used for harbour service from 1810.

Sold 28-Aug-1816.

Won the Battle Honours: St. Kitts 1782 and The Saints 1782.
