Resolution Class (1968) SSBN
Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines

With the vulnerability of the RAF's nuclear armed V bombers increasing during the 1960's. It was decided that the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear defence capability was to be updated to ballistic missile submarines.

So work began designing the Resolution Class of boats.

The Resolutions were based on the US Lafayette Class armed with Polaris A3 missiles, but with British designed nuclear power plant, sensors etc.

Originally 5 were planned but only four could be afforded. But even with the reduced number, one was always on-station.

They were retired during the mid-1990's and replaced by the Vanguard Class (1993) SSBN armed with Trident D5 missiles.
